Founded in 1966, Vans opened up its first store in California and on its first day had 12 customers. Word spread of the innovative designs being created in the Vans workshop and soon built a cult following of skateboarders, wakeboarders and motocross racers. They are now worn all over the world and are one of the most recognised brands in the shoe industry.
Vans shoes first opened their doors in 1966 when Paul Van Doren and three friends teamed up to pursue their dream. Unique to their competitors, Vans shoes (or the Van Doren Rubber Company as it was called then) were made on the premises with customers placing their order in the morning and returning later that day to pick them up. No middle man.
By the late 70s, skateboarders and BMX riders were besotted with Vans shoes with California being home to 70 stores alone. Towards the 80s, Vans embraced more sports introducing shoes for everything from basketball to skydiving to battle their competitors. The wide range and attempt to reach out to so many customers forced the brand to register for bankruptcy in 1983, despite the Vans core range selling well, but this was all history by 1988 when all debts had been paid and the original owners sold to a private investment company. Queue huge expansion and increased focus on the core sports where their customer base lies.
